Schijndel heart for art



'Heart for art' 

Image: Schijndel church of St. ServatiusIn the heart of the 'Brabantse Meierij', between ’s-Hertogenbosch en Eindhoven, you can find the village of Schijndel and the community of Wijbosch, that is part of Schijndel. Schijndel used to be famous for its wooden shoes, candles and socks. Nowadays, Schijndel is famous for its heart for the arts.

Art 

Image: Art in SchijndelSchijndel has an impressive art collection. There are over 80 different works of art placed in the village. A special brochure and tour had been made for you to see them. The council office is almost a museum; you can visit after an appointment with a guide. Located in the heart of Schijndel is the museum of 'Jan Heesters'. It has a beautiful garden with sculptures. Every year this museum has several expositions. Just outside Schijndel you can find 'Atelier van Oorschot'. This gallery organises several expositions of modern art. This gallery also has a garden with sculptures. And there is also an organisation which organises expositions of modern arts.

Nature 

Image: Nature in SchijndelSchijndel has kept a lot of historical and cultural elements of the nature. You can walk or cycle through the 150 hectare nature area of Wijbosch and Smaldonk. In the middle of Schijndel you can find a lovely park: ‘Heempark De Blekert’. Here you can see elements of different landscapes which are typical to Schijndel. In the botanical ‘Kijk en wandeltuin De Langstraterhof’ there are hundreds of different plants and flowers.

History and traditional crafts 

Image: one of the two mills in Schijndel Farms, historic houses, mills and religieus buildings give Schijndel its special character. The church ‘Sint Servatius’ in the centre of the village is prominent. Just outsite the centre you can find both the ‘Catharina-mill’ and the mill ‘De Pegstukken’. You can visit ‘De Pegstukken’ every other saterday morning.

Traditional crafts

Because of its poplar trees Schijndel has several traditional crafts like cloggs, hoops and baskets. The growth of hop is beneficial for the brewing of beer. There is still one brewery left in Schijndel, ‘Sint Servattumus’, which you can visit. There is also a clogg maker which you can see at work.

Recreation and shopping 

Image: The swimming pool Molen Hey in SchijndelSchijndel has a swimming pool in which you can spend all day. There are sauna’s, several pools, turkish baths, a tanning studio, squash courts and herbal baths. Schijndel has a camp site, bed and breakfast service and a small hotel.

Shopping

In the village centre, there are a lot of shops, terraces and several bars and restaurants. Every saterday you can visit the local market between 11.00 – 16.00 hours.
